Rain is one of the most common EV worries, and one of the most overblown. Charging equipment sold in India is built and certified to handle wet weather. The short version: plugging in during rain is safe by design — but knowing the do's and don'ts makes it foolproof.
Is it actually safe?
Yes. EV chargers, connectors, and the car's charging port are designed and tested to be used outdoors in rain. Public chargers stand outside in every monsoon; home chargers are rated for outdoor wall mounting. The system simply won't energise the cable until it has safely confirmed a locked, correct connection — so bare, live contacts are never exposed to the rain.
How the safety is built in
- Weatherproof enclosures (IP ratings): quality chargers carry ratings like IP54 or IP65, meaning they're protected against rain and dust. Look for the IP rating on any charger you buy.
- No power until connected: the charger and car “handshake” first. Power only flows once the connector is locked in place — the pins are never live in the open.
